What happens when you plop a staunch Republican senator on a deserted island with a progressive Democrat? That’s the scenario in Discovery’s Rival Survival, and it’s challenge Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) were eager to take on. “Both of us know just how frustrated people are with Washington right now,” said the politicians, who pitched the idea to the net. “We recognize how difficult it can be to cut through the partisanship.So we decided to do something completely out of the ordinary and frankly a little extreme to show the world and our colleagues that even if you have serious differences, if you want to survive you have to work together.” Series premieres Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 pm. (Perhaps this show should be listed under the Halloween tab in the spreadsheet cause this sounds frightening!!!)

Skyscraper Live with Nik Wallenda

“The king of the highwire” will attempt a tightrope trek in the Windy City on Discovery’s Skyscraper Live with Nik Wallenda, airing live in over 220 countries on Sunday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. The Peacock Productions event will be hosted by NBC News’s Willie Geist and Natalie Morales and The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore. Wallenda’s walk across the Grand Canyon in June 2013 was Discovery’s highest-rated event ever.

30 for 30

ESPN Films revealed the new projects that are driving its fall 30 for 30 slate this year, with the programs returning for a six-week run on Tuesday nights starting Oct. 7 on ESPN. In addition, one more film will run in Dec. The new batch begins with Playing for the Mob, which explores how mobster Henry Hill once helped orchestrate the fixing of Boston College basketball games and is narrated by Ray Liotta. Other topics include: the 1989 San Francisco earthquake shortly before Game 3 of the World Series; the rise, fall and maturation of former Oklahoma All-American linebacker Brian Bosworth; and the story of Livan and Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez. In addition, the brand’s first sequel will run in Dec. with The U Part 2, debut after the Heisman Trophy presentation. The film will examine how the University of Miami is trying to recover from NCAA sanctions and scandals.

2014 FIBA World Championship for Women

ESPN announced its plans for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women, which will be shown across ESPN platforms in its entirety, including the Final on ESPN2 on Oct. 5, at 2:00 pm. Commentator pairings include Michael Bett from Ankara Arena and Jeff Taylor and Lloyd Gardner from Abdi Ipekçi Arena. Bett and Taylor will pair for the single-elimination rounds from Fenerbahçe Arena. Women’s basketball analyst Rebecca Lobo will provide analysis for the title game on ESPN2 with play-by-play commentator Pam Ward.
