‘Tis the Season for Great Holiday Programming on Cable

Submitted by Brian Harder

When Thanksgiving arrives, that is when I feel like the holidays have finally arrived. It’s OK to put up the decorations, a night cap can include a little egg nog, and when I sit in front of the television, I expect to see a holiday movie or two. As we move into December and start to reflect on family, friends, joy and giving, it’s also time to turn to cable for the most wonderful programming of the year. Holiday programming can be found on more networks than ever before, and there are numerous ways to get your advertising message across this holiday season.

The first offering that comes to mind is 25 Days of Christmas from Freeform. Dig out your favorite Christmas sweaters and get ready for some serious holiday magic when the annual holiday stunt that airs holiday movies all day, every day. And don’t miss three original holiday movies including Life Size 2 on December 2 at 9:00 pm, featuring the return of Tyra Banks. Hallmark Channel continues their popular Countdown to Christmas. You’ll find holiday fare 24 hours a day. And don't miss the eight world premiere original holiday movies Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 pm (ET). Good tidings they bring, to you and your TV, with Lifetime holiday movies. During the month of December, Lifetime’s classic holiday franchise, It’s a Wonderful Lifetime, returns with 11 new original and multiple classic holiday movies. And the biggest news this holiday season, if you ask me, is the introduction of AMC into the holiday movie segment. They have acquired some of the biggest holiday titles in their history, some of them previously available on Freeform, to be broadcast all day long through Christmas. Best Christmas Ever promises the most Christmas on all of television with timeless classics and family favorites like Elf, The Polar Express, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

I also know that sometimes you just aren’t in the mood for holiday fare. And with numerous other networks, they aren’t all holiday focused. So you may be interested in some of these other great programming premieres in the month of December.

Bravo brings us back into the fold with Vanderpump Rules on Monday, December 3 at 9:00 pm. This season kicks off with the anticipated opening of TomTom where Lisa Vanderpump channels her energy into making sure her newest venture is the epitome of perfection. Then at 10:00 pm, check out Unanchored. It’s not always smooth sailing for these nine friends as friendships are strained, couples try to survive 24/7 together-ness, and fiery exes try to coexist peacefully for three weeks on a sailboat. Later that same week on Thursday, Bravo serves up the next season of Top Chef in Kentucky. This season, 15 chefs will compete for the sought-after title amid the unique culinary scenes in Louisville, Lexington, and Lake Cumberland, before heading to China for an epic finale. Tune in starting at 9:00 pm.

On December 4, The Profit returns to CNBC at 10:00 pm. Marcus Lemonis is back putting his own money on the line to help save and grow struggling businesses across the country. As an investor, he gets plenty of input into daily operations. The next night we are treated to the return of an iconic game show. Deal or No Deal with Howie Mandel makes its debut at 8:00 pm. The series continues to offer up a high-pressure, high-stakes game of risk and reward, in which contestants face a series of potentially life-altering decisions. With 26 sealed briefcases full of varying amounts of cash - ranging from a penny to $1 million - contestants have to decide whether to accept an offer of cash from the mysterious entity known only as "the Banker," in exchange for what might be contained in the contestant's chosen briefcase.

DIY premieres Maine Cabin Masters on Monday, December 3 at 10:00 pm. Follow Chase as he works with sister Ashley, brother-in-law Ryan and friends Lance, Jared and Matt to restore forgotten properties nestled within the farthest reaches of Maine.

If home renovation isn’t your thing, maybe body restoration is. On December 6 at 10:00 pm. Botched returns to E!. Botched is all about fixing body surgeries gone bad. With high stakes procedures and jaw dropping reveals, the doctors change the lives of their patients and face the most complicated and challenging reconstructive surgeries ever.

National Geographic premieres the documentary film Paris to Pittsburgh on Thursday, December 6 at 10:00 pm. From coastal cities to America’s heartland, Paris to Pittsburgh celebrates how Americans are demanding and developing real solutions in the face of climate change.

Syfy returns with somewhat of a tradition this December. Each year they introduce a mini-series or new show in December. This year we are treated to a psychological space thriller from the mind of George R.R. Martin called Nightflyers. Premiering December 2 and airing over 10 nights (Sun-Thur for two weeks at 10:00 pm), the show follows a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Their mission takes them to the edge of the solar system, and to the edge of insanity, as they realize true horror isn’t waiting for them in outer space—it’s already on their ship.

Then, love grows when and where you least expect it. Love After Lockup explores new shocking and revealing stories of couples who fall in love despite the prison bars between them. You can catch this show on WEtv starting Friday, December 7 at 9:00 pm.

NCAA College Football

It wouldn’t be December without football. And some of the most anticipated events this month are the college bowl games. While the last of the conference championships are decided on December 1st, the big questions on everyone’s mind will be, “Will my team be in the running for the National Championship?” or “Which bowl game will my team get invited to?” We’ve got your bowl schedule below. Then in January, tune in to ESPN on Monday, January 7 when they carry the National Championship game.
